It was open enrollment this weekend at "big school" as we call it in our house. We took a tour of the school with Milo so he could meet his new teacher and see the classroom and playground. It was a big hit of course. There are 2 playgrounds which sent his little heart soaring. His new teacher is lovely, very warm and friendly, just what you expect in a Pre-K teacher. The classroom is cozy it even has a fireplace, not in use obviously, but nice effect.
I spent a few minutes talking with the teacher and asking her a few things. Interesting tidbits about "big school" despite the fact it is a private catholic school there is no uniform for preschoolers. Also, and this is the heart breaking part of the story, they do not allow loveys into school. This means no Floppy. I have a brief heart palpitation over having to mention this to Milo. The teacher sees this on my face, and she says that she has never had a problem with this aspect, that the children adapt quite well. I have my doubts about this. I am sure they are awesome at coping while at school but the problem arises when they get home. I am quite sure there has been at least one Mom who has taken the wrath of a 3 or 4 year old because they were deprived of their best friend for the whole day.
Me: Now Milo when you get to big school, Floppy isn't going to be able to go with you.
Milo: Where will he go?
Me: He will stay at home.
Milo: (sad look on his face) But who will snuggle me?
Me: I can snuggle you buddy.
Milo: (tears are starting to form) Nobody can snuggle me and talk to me!
Me: I can snuggle you (admittedly I wasn't really getting it)
Milo: (flinging himself into my outstretched arms) No Mommy, who will snuggle and talk to me at big school? I will be all alone.
Me: (a small bit of my heart being ripped out as I glance at Floppy who is encased in Milo's arms) Buddy we will figure it out, I promise.
Milo: I don't want to be alone with nobody to snuggle me.
I filled out all the forms, provided the ridiculous amounts of documentation required for my son's admittance and we officially have him pre-enrolled. We find out in a month if he has been accepted. Floppy on the other hand will not be receiving any higher education beyond preschool. I haven't broken the news to him about that yet. Lets hope it goes better than it did with Milo.
