He knows us!

So big news in the world of Finn from this weekend. Finn said Dada and Mama! And he really did mean to be saying our names. Sure he has been babbling dadadada and mamamama for weeks and weeks. Usually he is standing at the coffee table banging a stuffed carrot against the table shrieking dadada. So we haven't really attributed that to his first word. Unless of course all along he has been referring to Mark and has been trying to demonstrate his overall frustration with the banging and the name calling, but somehow I doubt that.

I was sort of hoping that Finn would manage Mama as his first offical word, but it would seem he followed in the footsteps of his older brother Milo and said Dada first. So here is how it went down......

I was changing Finn on his changing table, and he is really becoming quite the squirmy baby, tossing and rolling around. There is a window in his room that looks out onto our sun room. Mark was in the sun room and so Finn pulled himself up to a standing position on the changing table so that he could have a better view (naked of course) and was patting the glass and laughing as Mark talked to him and made faces. I wrangled my youngest back into a laying position so I could fasten the diaper properly. Once diapered he managed to get standing again but this time Mark was no longer at the window. He pounded his hand against the glass and said, "Dada." No response, naturally because Mark was gone. So he did it again, and his tone was plaintive, like he was calling for him. He continued banging on the glass screaming Dada and then turned to look at me, and his face was just so crestfallen that Dada wasn't there. But it did make Mark really happy to know that Finn finally at long last does know his name.

While Mark was beaming I was secretly a little sad, which is silly, you don't have to tell me. I know that dada is a very easy thing to say, those "m" sounds take a bit more skill. So I don't take it really personally, but as I said, I was hoping for an early Mama, but then doesn't every Mama? Finn totally delivered this morning....

It is end of month, just this very crazy business day where I have to be at work before 7am, I will work till after 5pm and I will busy morning till night. It was 5:45am and I was attempting to get myself together and Finn was playing on our bed while Mark was helping Milo to get dressed. Finn was crawling over to me, and I had briefly turned my back to grab something. Finn let out this very distressed, "Mama" cry. Not a repitition of mamamamama. But an actual plain, simple, clear Mama. I spun around, I looked down at him, and he grinned at me. The smile was ear to ear, so of course I picked him up and we had a love fest. Right at that moment my heart was near to bursting. It doesn't matter he used Dada a day before, all is right in my world today.
