Charities

Last night at dinner I was telling Mark about a local charity that helps disadvantaged children in the community. Basically each child is matched up with a police officer and the officer takes them out for the day in his patrol car. They have breakfast and then they go to Target where the children get to buy $200 worth of clothes, essentials and one special toy. Milo asked me why they did this and I explained that not all boys and girls were as lucky as he is. Some little boys and girls don't get presents or have many toys or clothes like he has. We discussed this and he said he wanted to give them some of his toys. As a family we decided it would be nice to do a Christmas Angel this year and pick out some nice things for a little boy or girl.

Milo is one for mulling things over. He takes in some things and then will often ask me more questions about it later on. This was no exception. This morning in the car the subject came up again.

Milo: Mommy why do those boys not have toys?
Me: (I admit it took me a moment to piece it together) What? Oh the little boys and girls. Well some boys and girls aren't as lucky as you, and their Mommy and Daddy cannot buy them toys or clothes.
Milo: But Santa brings them toys.
Me: Well some boys and girls don't have homes like we do. So Santa doesn't know where to bring the toys. This is why it is a very good thing to help these little boys and girls.
Milo: (with a very serious look on his face) They no have homes?
Me: No they don't sweetie.
Milo: (gazing out of the window) We should help those boys and girls
Me: I think we should too babe.
Milo: First we need to get them some wood so they can build a house
Me: (totally rolling with this as more than likely there will be no Christmas Angels that say: Shoes size 8 and some wood) And what else will they need?
Milo: Um Um. And also a potty.
Me: Good thinking.
Milo: Do they have beds?
Me: Some of them do not have their own beds
Milo: Well they need beds too. And some covers so they can make their beds.
Me: Oh that would be nice
Milo: And some pillows too and sheets.
Me: What kind of sheets
Milo: Some kinds like superman and spiderman
Me: What about the girls? What kind would they like?
Milo: Girls? Hmm, let me think (tapping his finger against his chin) Oh I know. Girls like "tebby dares"
Me: Oh they do huh? What about clothes, don't you think they need clothes and shoes?
Milo: Yes Mommy so that they can climb up onto big rocks
Me: Is that all they need?
Milo: Nope, they need some doors and some windows. Lots and lots of windows here and there and there too. And some cow poop.
Me: What? Cow poop?
Milo: So they can make their gardens grow big and strong like batman.
Me:(He must be referring to our recent winter lawn reseeding and the manure we put on it) Well that would be nice.
Milo: And Mommy? Mommy? We should get them some toys too.
Me: Okay
Milo: And while we are at the store if you want to get me a toy for helping, they would like that too.
